EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Resilience in a Changing World (FIBE2)

Max Langtry and Monty Jackson recently returned from their highly successful secondment in California. Over April they visited Stanford University to join their supervisor Ruchi Choudhary, who is a Stanford Visiting Professor during her sabbatical, and spend time with the Urban Informatics Lab led by Professer Rishee Jain.

The secondment was a fantastic opportunity for Max to share the findings of his research, and for Monty to develop collaborations and research themes to accelerate his PhD progress. Alongside getting immersed in the research culture of the Urban Informatics Lab and life on the Stanford campus, Max and Monty also had the chance to engage with US researchers from across engineering disciplines. This included presenting at the Stanford Sustainability Data Science conference, and visiting the Lawrence Berkley National Lab for a round table research discussion on the key issues in the building energy field.

Thanks to their FIBE2 studentship funding, Max and Monty were able to spend a whole month in California. This time allowed them to make the most of the many opportunities available. They got to spend valuable in-person time with their supervisor, getting invaluable support on the PhD theses and first year reports. They were also able to  become part of the Stanford research community and engage with industry and research professionals across the Bay area, amongst many other amazing experiences.

“It was a fantastic opportunity for us to see how researchers at Stanford are tackling building sustainability, learn about their world leading projects and the approaches they take, and discuss how we can weave this into the research we do in Cambridge.”                                       - Max Lantry and Monty Jackson
